John L. Marsh – Founder and Chief Operating Officer
(Combined Television Production & Nonprofit Experience - 39 Years)
The founder of Starfish Television Network, John L. Marsh is a versatile production specialist. A graduate of Brigham Young University, John's 39-year career in television includes membership in the prestigious Director's Guild of America. John worked in Hollywood for many years as a staff and freelance stage manager on a long list of television shows, including, The Barbara Mandrell Show, The Newlywed Game, and numerous Sid & Marty Krofft productions .
John “fell” into the nonprofit world when he started stage managing the annual Muscular Dystrophy Association telethons. With his love of “doing good,” he realized the opportunity existed to create the world’s first nonprofit television channel designed to tell the story of the world’s great charities.
In 1983, John was recruited by Joe Lake to stage manage and floor direct the annual Children’s Miracle Network Telethon. He managed hundreds of entertainers, performers and celebrities during the annual television special for 16 years. That relationship developed into a lifelong friendship with Joe.
In 1989, John joined Broadcast International to head up their television production division, where he built a unique television production department from the ground up including designing versatile sets.
In 1997, John became the Executive Producer for the Lawyers Communication Network. This network was a joint venture between Broadcast International and the American Bar Association. He oversaw the acquisition and production of hundreds of hours of programming for this new network. He was directly responsible for up to 14 television production crews working simultaneously at each annual ABA conference, and oversaw the editing of these programs after each convention.
In 2000, Safeway Stores, Inc. asked John to be the manager of the Safeway Satellite Network, and in this capacity he built a 2000 site network from the ground up. His responsibilities included the supervision of the satellite television network and the in-store music for this Fortune 50 Company.
On April 18, 2007, John launched the first broadcast of the Starfish Television Network, Where America Comes…to Care.

Machelle Lake – Vice President of Programming
(Combined Television Production & Nonprofit Experience - 23 Years)
With extensive experience in public relations, nonprofit management, marketing communications, community and media relations, promotional and script writing and special event production, Machelle is no stranger to the nonprofit and celebrity worlds. Her earliest charity memory is, as an early teen, volunteering with March of Dimes Walk America and escorting John Schneider (Dukes of Hazzard TV series) to various Walk locations to meet the participants. That year, she made thousands of phone calls following up on per-mile pledges for hundreds of walkers.
In 1983 her father co-founded Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) to benefit hospitals for children in the US and Canada. Machelle stepped up to become one of their first volunteers, helping with clerical needs during the year. In addition, for the first 8 years, she was the Executive Talent Coordinator for the annual CMN telethon, working with hundreds of celebrities on their on-air live appearances. During this time, she worked with legends such as Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr, the Osmonds, David Copperfield, Bill Cosby, Connie Stevens and Bob Hope.
Eventually, Machelle’s volunteering led her to a career in the non-profit sector. While working for Marriott Hotels, she was hired to begin a national employee-driven, grass-roots fund raising program called Marriott Pride. Under her direction, Marriott businesses across North America banded together to raise money for their local Children’s Miracle Network hospitals. From building relationships with those hospitals, Machelle was lured away to Children’s Hospital Los Angeles to help coordinate the Children’s Miracle Network efforts in five Southern California counties. When the CMN Director left a few years later, she took over the Children’s Miracle Network program, including their annual television special. Ultimately, Machelle was recruited “home” to the Children’s Miracle Network national office.
After spending all of her career raising money for children’s hospitals, Machelle branched out into the traditional business sector. Although she continued to be involved with nonprofit events, working with high-profile individuals such as Larry King, Vice President Dick Cheney, Jeff Bridges, Lionel Ritchie, Lewis Black, Ben Roethlisberger, and Leigh Steinberg, she soon found that she longed to return full-time to her passion.
A few years ago, Machelle returned to her non-profit roots and joined the March of Dimes team at the Salt Lake chapter. Shortly thereafter, she received a call from an old friend, John Marsh, who had worked with Machelle for 15 years at the Children‘s Miracle Network annual television event. John had launched a new television network for charities. And her life has not been the same since!
